Headphones are a varied bunch in terms of how much current they take to drive properly, and those little inbuilt headphone amps in CD players and assorted systems are a stop-gap at best. If you have even a reasonable set of headphones, they'll sound better through a proper headphone amplifier like the Rhinelander by Lehmann. It has the right combination of small but capable amplifier section, quality volume control, specially selected components, and enough resilience to cope with the varying demands of full-size upmarket headphones.
