The Play:3 speaker is the smaller and more affordable powered speaker/zone player option in the Sonos lineup. The Play:3 has just power and ethernet connections, but can run wirelessly as part of a Sonos network. There are three drivers and three D-class (digital) amplifier modules in each speaker. They can be oriented horizontally or vertically and the electronics adjusts the audio response automatically to suit either.
Through the Play:3 you can play all the same sources as through the Connect:Amp or the Connect. Stream from your hard drive library, online services such as Spotify or MOG, and Internet radio.
One speaker can be used as a basic audio system in any secondary area of the home or workplace. If better sound is required, two can be used together, with one set to right channel and the other to left. Another really great feature is that you can use two of these speakers a music zones, but if you get a Playbar as well, the two Play:3 can be drafted into service as the rear effects speakers during any movie session, then taken back to the rooms where they normally stay.
Sonos is a flexible system and can be configured a number of different ways. For primary zones, where the best hifi sound is required, we recommend you use an amplifier and a pair of speakers fed by a Connect (ZP90) to bring the stored music or internet sources to the system. Another possibility is the Connect:Amp (ZP120) with a pair of speakers. Then there's the surround setup, with a Playbar, Sub and two Play:3 as rears - very big surround sound results for around $2800, but also able to do all the Sonos tricks with music.
