The Play:3 speaker adds an even smaller and more affordable powered speaker/zone player option to the Sonos lineup. The larger Play:5 (also known as the S5) has been a round for some time and has been quite successful. The Play:3 has just power and ethernet connections, but can run wirelessly as part of a Sonos network. There are three drivers and three D-class (digital) amplifier modules in each speaker. They can be oriented horizontally or vertically and the electronics adjusts the audio response automatically to suit either.
One speaker can be used as a basic audio system in any secondary area of the home or workplace. If better sound is required, two can be used together, with one set to right channel and the other to left. For primary zones, where proper hifi sound is required, we recommend you use an amplifier and a pair of speakers fed by a Connect (ZP90) to bring the stored music or internet sources to the system. Another possibility is the Connect:Amp (ZP120) with a pair of speakers. Sonos is a flexible system and can be configured a number of different ways. The Play:3 adds another useful element to their lineup.
