Sonos have introduced their new Wireless Dock WD100, which looks similar to most docks on the market except that there are no wires – well, except for the power cord. It’s designed to be available as an input to your sonos multi-room music system, so you can access the music on an iPod from any Sonos zone in the house. Notice I say “an iPod” not just “your iPod”, since your music is already in iTunes and presumably already available to Sonos – unless your tunes are restricted by DRM (Digital Rights management). You can overcome this by upgrading the DRM’d tracks you’ve bought from iTunes – or simply buy a WD100 Dock!
The second aspect is that the WD100 makes it possible to immediately play someone else’s music on your Sonos, or play your music at their place, if they have a dock too or if you take yours along!
In any event, it’s another string to your bow, and will be a welcome add-on to those thousands of Sonos systems out in the community. It’s compatible with 3r, 4th and 5th generation iPods, Classic and Touch models, and iPhone4 & 3GS.
Sonos has been the most successful multi-room audio system ever, and will continue to be dominant for a number of reasons. It just goes on evolving all the time.
