Enquire about this product

Harmonic distortionf or wall-mounted speaker, the 686 S2 is designed to fit into any space and still sound perfect. Its main driver is a 5-inch bass/midrange unit which benefits from a new 25mm voice coil which makes for a higher sensitivity speaker with bass more suited for placement near a wall.

The 600 S2 series features a new tweeter derived from the top-of-the-CM range model CM10. They are further 'Decoupled' from the cabinets to reduce vibration.

Preventing cabinet vibrations reaching the tweeter leads to cleaner, sweeter high-frequency performance. Synthetic gel cushions a Decoupled tweeter, with the assembly isolated from the mounting. The result is a more natural, spacious sound.

Sound from the rear of a driver or tweeter can bounce around a cabinet and undermine the good sound coming from the front. Nautilus Tapering Tubes, filled with absorbent wadding, reduce unwanted sound to a minimum.

It is the lovely refined and airy treble that has been the hallmark of the CM series, and now that fine character has been “trickled down” to the 600 series as well. While not all aspects of the build standard of the CM series can be expected to be present at the lower price level of the 600 series, there are many benefits of the design expertise and manufacturing standards that B&W is justly proud of.

The Kevlar midrange/bass drivers of the two-way models has been modified by a new dustcap design which reduces distortion, so the overall impression is better focus and improved capability to play cleanly at higher volumes.

The 686 S2 has been a favourite compact bookshelf speaker for starter systems or secondary areas, and can of course be used in quality surround systems too. The improved tweeter adds refinement not usually encountered in this category.

Decoupling
Preventing cabinet vibrations reaching the tweeter leads to cleaner, sweeter high-frequency performance. Synthetic gel cushions a Decoupled tweeter, with the assembly isolated from the mounting. The result is a more natural, spacious sound.

Nautilus Tubes
Not all sound is good. Sound from the rear of a driver or tweeter can bounce around a cabinet and undermine the good sound coming from the front. Nautilus Tapering Tubes, filled with absorbent wadding, reduce unwanted sound to a minimum.

Kevlar
The same properties that let Kevlar stop a bullet also make it ideal for soaking up standing waves in a speaker cone, so they don't colour midrange sound. That's why our midrange cones have been made with Kevlar since 1974. It delivers a cleaner sound, to a wider group of listeners. The new 600 Series continues this trend.

FST
Fixed Suspension Transducer' Kevlar cones are mounted in a narrow ring of foam. This 'surroundless' suspension minimises distortion by converting unwanted energy into heat, not sound. The result is the cleanest midrange around.

Anti Resonance Plug
Unlike most dust caps, these mushroom-shaped devices - first seen in the PM1, and now in the 600 Series - fit tightly inside the voice coil bobbins. This ensures better pistonic movement,

 reducing higher-frequency break-up for a superior performance.

Flowport
The surface dimples around the 600 Series Flowport minimise turbulence by generating tiny eddy currents over which air can flow smoothly, like a golf ball. This reduces turbulence and leads to improved bass response at higher volumes.

Crossover
The crossover sends the audio signal to the right driver, depending on frequency. The simpler this vital component is, the better. And the better the drivers, the simpler it can be. In the 600 Series the high-frequency crossover uses just one capacitor.
